I hear this complaint a lot when I try to explain bitcoin. Silk Road, ransom ware attacks, so forth, but why does the currency exchanged during illegal activities matter. They say btc is for criminals, but isn't the usd the currency that's been involved in the most criminal activity through time?
Why is bitcoin to blame? Ransomware attacks and illegal market places involve the internet, should the internet be banned? Probably used a keyboard and a mouse should they go too? WTF. I don't understand

Silk Road was operated by "Dread Pirate Roberts" (named after the fictional character from The Princess Bride), who was known for espousing libertarian ideals and criticizing regulation. Initially, buyers could register for free, but there were a limited number of new seller accounts available; new sellers had to purchase an account via an auction. The creator of Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht (aka Dread Pirate Roberts) had challenged the legality of the bitcoin forfeiture. In addition, transactions on Silk Road could only be made using bitcoin, which, although not entirely anonymous, offered a level of anonymity far greater than any other form of currency or credit card transactions would have enabled. One is Silk Road founder Dread Pirate Roberts, who the FBI claim is currently in their custody. The other is Satoshi Nakamoto, the still-unidentified creator of Bitcoin. The Bitcoin rate was undergoing strong fluctuations at the time, but the damage was estimated at around $25 million. DPR found himself under enormous pressure. To start with, the lost Bitcoins did not actually belong to DPR but to his traders, who now discovered that their trading accounts on Silk Road had been completely emptied.
